ings, CEO, Cummings PrintingJake Hamel, COO, Cummings Printing\n\nCollege
and university magazines carry an important responsibility: they must enga
ge alumni, showcase institutional pride, and make a lasting impression&mda
sh\;often while working within tight budgets and rising production costs.
In this session, Cummings Printing will share practical, real-world strate
gies to help designers and publication teams get more value from every pri
nt dollar without sacrificing quality or impact.\nDrawing from our experie
nce printing publications for more than 30 colleges and universities natio
nwide, we will discuss the advantages of short-run web press production, e
conomical trim sizes, efficient page counts, smart paper and cover choices
, and affordable coatings that can elevate a magazine without breaking the
budget. We will also explore creative ways to make a publication stand ou
t, from subtle production upgrades to thoughtful design decisions that imp
rove both appearance and efficiency.\nAttendees will leave with useful pri
nt knowledge, cost-conscious ideas, and practical questions to ask before
their next magazine goes to press.\n\n\nDate: Wednesday, June 17, 2026Time

nters\nChris Cummings\nChris Cummings is Co-CEO of Cummings Printing, a fo
 urth-generation, family-owned publication printer specializing in high-qua
lity short-run web press magazines. Although he officially began his caree
r at Cummings Printing in 2013 at age 16, Chris grew up around the company
and has been immersed in the people, processes, and craftsmanship of prin
t for much of his life.\nChris began on the production floor in mailing an
d bindery before earning a Bachelor&rsquo\;s degree in Business Management
from the University of Florida. After returning to Cummings full time, he
completed a comprehensive yearlong training program across every major de
partment, including bindery, pressroom, prepress, purchasing, estimating,
billing, customer service, and sales. That hands-on experience gave him a
deep understanding of what it takes to produce magazines efficiently, cons
istently, and with the quality clients expect.\nToday, Chris focuses prima
rily on operations, helping ensure Cummings Printing delivers the reliabil
ity, service, and production insight that colleges, universities, and publ
ishers depend on.\nJake Hamel\nJake Hamel is Chief Operating Officer at Cu
mmings Printing and brings a deeply practical understanding of magazine pr
oduction from years spent learning the business from the ground up. He off
icially began working at Cummings Printing in 2011 at age 16, starting in
the bindery and also gaining early experience in the pressroom and shippin
g departments.\nAfter graduating from Saint Anselm College with a degree i
n Mathematics, Jake returned to Cummings Printing and completed a yearlong
training process across the company&rsquo\;s production and business oper
ations. His experience included bindery, pressroom, prepress, purchasing,
estimating, billing, customer service, and sales, giving him a broad under
standing of how each decision impacts the final printed product.\nJake&rsq
uo\;s background allows him to help clients think through the details that
matter most in magazine production, from efficiency and scheduling to qua
lity, cost, and overall impact. His hands-on experience makes him a valuab
le resource for designers and publication teams looking to make smart prin
t decisions and get more value from every project.\n \n\n \n\n--- This iCa

 le: 2026 UCDA Design Conference: Duality\nStart Date / Time: Nov 04, 2026
00:00 AM America/Chicago\nLocation: Kansas City\nJoin us in Kansas City, M
issouri, for the 56th annual UCDA Design Conference: November 4-7, 2026.\n
The creative world has been reshaped by the rise of AI-driven tools, chall
enging the balance between authenticity and the expectation to rapidly cre
ate. As these technologies become embedded in everyday workflows, question
s around authorship, originality, and creative voice are more pressing tha
n ever. This year&rsquo\;s conference theme, Duality, invites us to explor
e how creatives are navigating this shift: embracing new tools while striv
ing to preserve the human perspective that gives our work meaning.\nKansas
City, Missouri, serves as the host city for this year&rsquo\;s conference
. Located near the geographic center of the continental United States, it
symbolically divides the country into two regions. This sense of duality i
s further reflected in the metro area&rsquo\;s unique position spanning tw
o cities&mdash\;with the same name&mdash\;across two states. In addition t
o its thematic relevance, Kansas City offers strong access to local design
talent and convenient travel options for attendees from both the East and
West Coasts.\nBenefits of Attending\nEach year, the UCDA Design Conferenc
e brings together designers, educators, communicators, and students to con
nect, learn, and get inspired. It&rsquo\;s your chance to dive into the la
test design and communication trends&mdash\;especially those that matter m
ost in higher education&mdash\;and explore what&rsquo\;s happening across
the broader design world. You&rsquo\;ll walk away with fresh ideas, creati
ve energy, and new ways to collaborate. Plus, it&rsquo\;s a great opportun
ity to grow your skills, meet new people, and be part of a vibrant, suppor
tive professional community.\n\nProgramming\nThe 2026 UCDA Design Conferen
ce will offer a mix of mainstage presentations and breakout sessions desig
ned to inform, inspire, and energize. Our programming will focus on four k
ey areas: Technology, Inspiration, Professional Practice, and Education&md
ash\;each curated to meet the needs of creatives working in and around hig
her education.\n\nTechnology: Stay on top of the latest tools, trends, and
tech shaping the design world. Whether you&rsquo\;re exploring new softwa
re, discovering how emerging technologies impact your institution, or prep
aring for what&rsquo\;s next, these sessions are designed to keep you info
rmed and adaptable.\nInspiration: These sessions are all about sparking cr
eativity and shifting perspectives. You&rsquo\;ll leave feeling refreshed,
recharged, and ready to see your work&mdash\;and the world&mdash\;through
a new lens.\nProfessional Practice: Dig into practical, hands-on learning
designed to boost your everyday work. You&rsquo\;ll find &ldquo\;how-to&r
dquo\; sessions, skill-building workshops, and advice on everything from c
ommunication and ethics to time management, freelancing, and career growth
.\nEducation: Tailored for design educators and lifelong learners alike, t
hese content-rich sessions cover topics like research, pedagogy, curriculu
m development, and more. Whether you&rsquo\;re on a tenure track or expand
ing your design expertise, these sessions offer valuable insight and suppo
rt.\n\nIn addition to sessions, we&rsquo\;ll celebrate outstanding work at
the UCDA Design Awards Show, host the always-popular Publications Swap Sh
op, celebrate creative excellence with the Krider Prize winner, get into f
riendly bidding wars during the UCDA Foundation Silent Auction, and make p
