    POSITION LEVEL: Assistant Professor, tenure track, starting August 2017.

    SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    South Dakota State University Graphic Design Professors teach in a robust and growing BFA program.

    Candidates for the Assistant Professor position will teach assigned courses in Graphic Design, support accreditation effort, and engage in student recruitment and retention. Candidates will demonstrate expertise in one or more of the areas listed below. Successful candidates will evidence success in teaching and demonstrate the capacity to establish a national scholarship/creative agenda as evidenced by peer-review. Provide assigned School service.

    School of Design tenured and tenure track faculty teach a 2/3 course load and are assigned 20% scholarship/creative activity responsibilities.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    • MFA or MDes in Design or equivalent terminal degree.
    • Evidence teaching Graphic Design at university level as demonstrated through student portfolio.
    • Graphic design expertise in professional practice or design achievement as demonstrated through portfolio.
    • Growing scholarship or creative agenda demonstrated through portfolio or publication.
    • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
    • Effective interpersonal skills.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • MFA or MDES in Graphic Design or Interactive Design.
    • Success teaching all levels of Graphic Design at the university level as demonstrated through student portfolio and national peer-review.
    • Graphic Design expertise in professional practice or design achievement demonstrated through national peer-review and personal portfolio in one or more of the areas listed below.
    • Capacity to establish a national scholarship/creative agenda demonstrated by peer-review.
    • Knowledge of NASAD accreditation policies and procedures.
    • Success attracting and recruiting students.
    • Experience teaching collaboratively and ability to teach in a peer discipline within the School of Design.
    • Demonstrated commitment to working with diverse students, faculty, and staff.

    SOUTH DAKOTA STATE UNIVERSITY:

    Graphic Design is nested in SDSU’s School of Design where faculty and programs form a collaborative teaching and research environment that values cross-program and interdisciplinary initiatives. The School grants the BFA in: Graphic Design, Studio Art and Interior Design; BLA in Landscape Architecture; and BFA and the MArch in Architecture. Students may also earn certificates of study in: Animation, Art History, Ceramics, Graphic Design, Painting, Printmaking, and Sculpture. Graphic Design students may pursue minors in Advertising, Entrepreneurial Studies, Film Studies, Museum Studies, Computer Science, or related study.

    Graphic Design has initiated NASAD accreditation and is committed to a successful outcome by 2019. Graphic Design majors are served by five full-time design faculty complimented by art foundation instructors. Graphic Design majors study visual communications theory and practice in digital, print, time-based, on-line, and interactive media. Areas of study include: Typography, Branding, Computer Graphics, Publication, Motion Graphics, Web/Interactive, Digital Illustration, Advertising, Visual Communication, and Computer Animation.

    ABOUT THE COMMUNITY:
    SDSU is located in Brookings, South Dakota, a community of approximately 22,000 near the east central border of South Dakota on Interstate 29. Eastern South Dakota and the region enjoy a rich fabric of smaller cities eager to embrace innovative and smart design practice and culture. Brookings boasts an excellent K-12 education system, accessibility to major medical facilities, along with an active cultural and social environment. The region is dotted with numerous lakes and outdoor recreation within easy driving. Brookings is 50 miles north of Sioux Falls, a city of about 160,000 in fast and increasing development.
