    The Office of University Communications is responsible for the strategic management of the University’s overall public relations and reputation management activities. The department provides leadership, counsel and services to over 200 communicators across campus and works with those communicators to ensure a unified campus-wide communications strategy. Areas within University Communications include: Executive Communications, Media Relations, Visual Communications & Production, Content Strategy, Social Media, Issues Management, Public Records, the UNC-Chapel Hill Visitor’s Center, and UNC Creative.

    Position Description:  
    University Communications’ goal is to communicate effectively and market the
    institution’s outstanding educational experience, its impact on the quality of life in the state; and its prominent role on the national and international stage.

    Reporting to the Director of UNC Creative, the University Art Director and Brand Manager will play a lead role in providing brand strategy, guidance and creative feedback about work produced for the University. This position will serve as a creative and brand consultant for schools and units campus-wide, with the goal of elevating the quality of work produced and strengthening the University’s brand by bringing more of campus in line with the University’s branding and identity standards.

    Additionally, the University Art Director and Brand Manager will act as a lead designer for the team by translating communications opportunities and challenges into well-designed products that visually communicate the brand for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. UNC Creative’s designers are responsible for producing visual and digital materials for a wide variety of clients – ranging from the Chancellor’s Office and many of the schools and units on campus to the UNC System. The University Art Director and Brand Manager will guide designers in their creative direction and concepts, ensuring that all work that leaves the office is professional and in line with the University’s visual identity.

    The University Art Director and Brand Manager will work collaboratively with the director for any design decisions and the Director of Visual Communications and Production in any brand identity decisions that arise. Together, they will provide support and guidance to campus units and have vision to evolve the University brand so that it remains current and relevant.

    Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:  
    Bachelor’s degree, preferably In design, visual arts or journalism, from an accredited four-year college or university.

    Preferred Qualifications:  
    Demonstrated mastery of design principles through a portfolio or print or
    electronic products.
    Thorough knowledge of the principles and methods of planning, designing and producing visually appealing products that communicate a clear message to
    target audiences.
    Ability to communicate well with clients across campus and with printers and other vendors, and distribute this information to junior designers In the office.
    Ability to take an assignment or complex project and see it through the design and production processes with no supervision.
    Ability to offer supervision, as support to the director, to junior-level designers through a complex project.
    Computer skills on a Mac platform With programs such as Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office.
    Preferred prior work experience: Designing for clients in settings such as advertising agencies, marketing firms or a higher education setting.
    Creative supervision of junior-level designers.
    Collaborating with professional communicators, photographers, programmers, IT staff and printers.

    Qualifications and Experience:  
    Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
