- Overview: The Communications Photographer is member of the Division of Communications' creative team, and is instrumental to helping tell Bucknell's story and producing images that convey the University's core messages, engage Bucknell's key audiences and support the University in achieving its strategic goals. We are seeking a creative and highly skilled photographer with the ability to capture all aspects of Bucknell University in visually compelling and diverse perspectives for use in print and digital materials developed by the Division of Communications. The Communications Photographer will report to the Associate Director of Social & Visual Communications, and must be able to manage a variety of projects, from assignments with specific direction to more loosely defined and impromptu shoots with very little or no direction.

The successful candidate will possess vast and up-to-date knowledge of photography techniques, trends, equipment and related tools, and remains abreast of the latest advancements in the profession. The individual in this position will work collaboratively with graphic designers, writers, freelance photographers, web developers and other colleagues within the Division and across the University. This position will regularly attend evening and/or weekend activities, and may also be required to travel to off-campus, University-related events. The Communications Photographer must be committed to Bucknell's mission as a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other.
-Conceptualizes, plans, and manages photo shoots that support the -Division's communications and marketing strategy in collaboration with colleagues. Collaborates with colleagues to generate interesting and creative photo concepts.
-Captures creative and compelling images representing the full range of University activities both on and off campus.
-Produces content of the highest quality, authenticity and accuracy and that reflects and supports Bucknell's brand messages and graphic and editorial standards and style.
-Provides and edits professional-quality photographs for use in a variety of mediums, including but not limited to the Bucknell website, various digital and print publications, social media channels and University news stories.
-Manages the Division's Digital Asset Management System, Widen, to archive and share photos, and maintains clear and consistent naming conventions and robust metadata to meet the needs of the various offices within the Division.
-Works with the Associate Director of Social & Visual Communications and the Communications Editorial Assistant to cultivate and schedule a pool of qualified and reliable freelance and student photographers, and maintains up-to-date photography contracts for that pool.
-Coordinates with the Communications Editorial Assistant to maintain an up-to-date photography calendar.
-Pursues professional development opportunities to stay up-to-date with technology and creative approaches in the field.
-Ensures the operational condition of departmental equipment by testing and performing preventive maintenance as appropriate. Oversees the security, operation and maintenance of equipment used in shooting and editing.
-In consultation with the Associate Director of Social & Visual Communications and Director of Operations & Special Projects, monitors and helps develop annual photography budgets, including to replace aging equipment and to explore new technologies that enhance the content produced by the team.
-Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
-Performs other tasks as assigned.
-Minimum of five years of professional photography experience
-Evidence of creative ability and technical skill demonstrated through a comprehensive portfolio
-In depth knowledge of up-to-date photography techniques, trends, equipment and related tools
-Experience using a Digital Asset Management System, preferably Widen
-Expertise using photo editing and management tools, such as Adobe Lightroom
-Adobe Photoshop expertise
-Expertise in both natural and studio lighting techniques
-Demonstrated ability to effectively photograph a wide range of subject matter (including portraits, landscapes, buildings and events) for print and digital use
-Ability to efficiently coordinate a busy shoot with multiple and diverse subjects
-Ability to maintain a flexible schedule, including working evenings and weekends
-Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment
-Excellent communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a dynamic team
-Bachelor's degree in a field related to photography
-Experience with Widen
-Demonstrated ability to shoot and edit video
