Dave DeCaro's Biography
University of California San Diego
Marketing & Communications Manager
I was on vacation in South Carolina when I got the call that I was to be on the Board of Directors for UCDA. What a great way to begin 2017! After attending years and years of standard design conferences (I won’t name names), I was blown away to find one that spoke to what I do: higher education marketing. I have gotten a plethora of ideas from UCDA, made a ton of worthwhile connections, and learned so many valuable skills through my time of volunteering with this extremely worthwhile organization.
Me in the proverbial nutshell: I am one of those rare California natives. There aren’t too many of us. My dad moved us away from the golden west when I was a young tot (no, I’m not giving the year) and moved us to the suburbs of Philadelphia. I attended (and graduated from) Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, and stayed there for another 13 years after graduation (nope... still not giving a year). Finally, at the ripe old age of 35, I decided to throw caution to the wind by quitting my job, selling my house, and driving my janky Jeep Wagoneer across the country to go back to the land where I was born: sunny San Diego. The rest is history; well, my history at least. Along the way I have been an artist (love to paint people), musician (piano, violin, and saxophone... alto for those who know), cinema nut, runner, traveler, history buff, completely amateur and unlicensed architect, cook, tour guide, photographer, and pop culture blogger. Fortunately, I have not pursued all of those interests at the same time.
For the last umpteen years, I have been the Marketing & Communications Manager of Housing-Dining-Hospitality at UC San Diego, located just blocks from the beach in La Jolla. There are worse places to be, but very few that are better! I love to travel and look forward to each and every UCDA Design Summit and UCDA Design Conference which provides me the opportunity to grow, network, and see new places.
Thanks for having me!
