Dave Yakley's Biography

Malone University
Director of Design

I grew up in Sugarcreek, Ohio which is in the middle of one of the largest Amish communities in the world. I am not Amish, but am very used to sharing the roads with horses and buggies. For my undergraduate degree, I decided to stay near home and attended Malone University (then College) in nearby Canton. Here, I studied a wide variety of things including journalism, communication theory, education, literature, and writing. At the end of five years, 154 credit hours, and the completion of student teaching I knew one thing -- I didn't want to be a high school teacher.

Like many of us graphic designer folks, I happened upon design somewhat by accident. As part of my undergraduate degree, I attended the Institute on Political Journalism held at Georgetown University. It was there that I had my first real 'layout' experience while completing an internship at the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

After backing off the teaching gig, I decided to take the GRE to see what possibilities there were for me in graduate school. After taking the test, I noticed a program that seemed to combine my educational background and my interest in desktop publishing. I wound up back east in Baltimore to study a unique program at the University of Baltimore -- publications design. The program integrated writing and graphics.

I've been fortunate to return to my undergrad alma mater as director of design. Since 1999, I've had the opportunity to grow and improve our alumni magazine as well as a myriad of other printed pieces for every area of campus including admissions, advancement, academics, athletics, music, etc. The variety of work has been stimulating. Recently, my office has added the website to its list of responsibilities. Our new challenge is to bring the website to the same level of consistency as our print publications. As many of you know, it is quite a challenge.

Working at Malone has afforded me several opportunities including a second shot at being in the classroom as a teacher. I currently teach two classes for the communication arts department including desktop publishing (sharing the joys of Adobe products with newbies!) and communication skills (sharing the agony of public speaking with first-year students!). I've also had the honor of leading a number of service-learning tripsfive to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota to paint large-scale murals in a school and church and two to Jamaica with the University Chorale. Those experiences were amazing! I also do the score book for Malone's home men's and women's basketball games.

I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to become involved in UCDA. I have learned so much and been inspired by the numerous conferences and events. BUT, it's been the people I've met that have been the biggest benefit. I love having colleagues and friends across the country!

Other things about me:
Suffering Northeastern Ohio sports fan: I can recall The Drive, The Fumble, The Shot, The Blown Save, and most recently The Decision like they were yesterday. I wish I could say that being a Cleveland sports fan hasn't affected my psyche, but let's just say I do not begin celebrating any sports victory until well after the final horn.

High school sports fan: It may be an Ohio thing, but high school sports are big here. The football stadium in Canton holds 23,000 people and hosts an NFL preseason game each year. AND IT SELLS OUT for Canton McKinley-Massillon games each year. Nothing excites me more than the Ohio High School Basketball tournament each winter.

Comic book geek: For some reason I am still most entertained and motivated by things from my childhood, and while I don't regularly read comic books I'm still in awe of the mythos and wonder Superman, Batman, or Captain America, etc.

J.R.R. Toliken fan: I would say LOTR fan, but it's The Hobbit that has always been my favorite book.
