How Not to be a Vidiot (AKA Essential Video Editing Techniques for Graphic Designers)

Video is everywhere today—TV, the internet, electronic brochures, and books. What’s more, graphic designers are expected to be able to “do it all.”

Don’t be a vidiot! Get the knowledge you need to edit and produce professional looking videos in Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects.

Adobe Certified Instructor David Creamer is a multimedia pro, graphic designer, former art director, production manager for international magazines, graduate of Kubert School of Graphic Art (back in the 80s pre-DTP as a traditional illustrator), and co-owner of IDEAS (since 1990). As a 25+ year seasoned instructor, David’s been there and done that, so he can relate to your challenges and help you maximize technology to translate creative concepts through to finished products—whether you are a beginner or at advanced level. He can take you to the limits of the software and back again to help you achieve artistic and technical success with your projects.

Learning Objectives:

  • Assemble video clips in Premiere Pro
  • Edit clips to remove unwanted scenes
  • Add titles to your project
  • Animate your titles
  • Remove the background with a green screen
  • Add effects to your video in After Effects
  • Output to internet-ready formats

Fee: $80 (attendee); $100 (guests)

Pre-registration required and space is limited.

Attendees may bring their own laptop and work along, or follow along taking notes. Computer workstations will not be provided.

Travel Sketching

Join the original urban sketcher, Seattle-area artist and journalist Gabriel Campanario, for a workshop of learning and exploration around downtown Portland. Gabi will share tips to draw on the go from more than a decade carrying a sketchbook on every trip. In this workshop, participants will learn how to pack just the right number of tools for every occasion and learn useful sketching techniques.

Workshop will include instruction, a sketchbook, and some minimal supplies to get you started, and will take place both onsite at the conference hotel as well as walking to locations throughout downtown Portland.

Fee: $80 (attendee); $100 (guests)

Pre-registration required and space is limited.

Includes supplies and instructions.

UCDA Foundation Silent Auction (through Mon., Oct. 14)

This is a highly anticipated event at every conference where a unique array of items are available and bidding wars inevitably ensue during the final moments! The sky is the limit on what you can contribute: nostalgic, handmade, silly, beautiful, practical, impractical. Have fun and support the UCDA Foundation at the same time. All proceeds directly benefit UCDA. Even if you are not able to attend the annual conference you can still participate! Items may be sent to the UCDA Home Office where they will be transported to the conference and placed on auction for you. For more information visit ucda.com/silent-auction.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 13

City Walk, Coffee Talk, or InstaMeet

Why not enjoy an early start with a walk around downtown Portland? Join UCDA leaders, colleagues, and friends for an invigorating beginning to your day.

More interested in coffee at that hour? Sit back with colleagues, friends, and UCDA leaders for some down-to-earth coffee talk.

Or, perhaps join the UCDA InstaMeet? These are typically very casual and lots of fun. Stroll through Tom McCall Waterfront Park with fellow attendees, explore Portland, and instantly share your visual treasures. #ucdaportland2019

Publication Swap Shop

Share your work and pick up some samples for inspiration in this limited-time event. Doors will open for one hour, and once the samples are gone, they’re gone! Bring or send ahead approximately 30 samples (or as many as you can spare). This is a run and get ‘em sample exchange. The doors open, and it’s a free-for-all. Those bringing or sending materials for the swap will receive a “priority pass” to be at the head of the line!

MONDAY, OCTOBER 14
